Portals
Portals collages are created from Japanese rice paper that has been painted with freeform watercolor strokes and marks. The papers are cut, torn and collaged into images that evoke landscapes and skies, underwater worlds and the dreamscapes of pure abstraction. They are portals to imaginary worlds and unseen vistas.
Mulberry paper inclusions, gold and silver leaf, and bas relief elements add dimension and texture.
These collages range in size from 18“x24” to as small as 5”x7”— the size flows from the images and vistas discovered within the random beauty of the painted paper.
Imaginary Botanicals
The Imaginary Botanicals series is inspired by the exquisite drawings created by artists working during the 19th century, the golden age of scientific illustration. These artists captured their subjects with scrupulous precision, recording the natural world for scientific study.
But these images are most compelling when the characteristics of flora and fauna seem to merge — a flower has animal-like appendages, while a sea creature has blossom-like beauty. Imaginary Botanicals conjures up a natural world where the border between flora and fauna is fluid and mysterious.
Executed in sepia ink and watercolor on 9”x12” paper.
